A Brief History of Skype
Launched in 2003 by Scandinavian entrepreneurs, Skype was acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion.
The service played a pioneering role in online communications, allowing users worldwide to make free voice
and video calls. However, with the rise of competitors such as Zoom, WhatsApp, and even Microsoft Teams,
Skype’s popularity has gradually declined.
Transition to Microsoft Teams
To ensure a smooth transition, Microsoft is offering Skype users the option to migrate to the free version
of Microsoft Teams. Users can log in to Teams using their Skype credentials, retaining their contacts and
conversations. This migration aims to provide an enhanced experience, as Teams offers additional features
such as real-time collaboration and integration with other Microsoft services.
Impact on Microsoft 365 Subscribers
Subscribers to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans previously received 60 minutes of Skype calls per month.
This benefit will be discontinued starting in March 2026. Until then, subscribers can continue using their Skype
minutes via the Skype web portal or within Teams Free.
Migration Process
To facilitate the transition, Microsoft has implemented a simplified process:
- Download Microsoft Teams from the official website.
- Log in using your Skype credentials.
- Your contacts and conversations will be automatically transferred.
Users can also manually export their Skype data if desired.
Impact on Users
The shutdown of Skype marks the end of an era in online communication. However, Microsoft assures that transitioning
to Teams will provide users with a more modern and integrated platform, better suited to today’s needs for collaboration
and communication.
