A blockage in the T102 processing tower led to improper handling by workers, triggering the devastating blasts. This operational failure highlighted serious lapses in safety protocols.


The Aftermath

The explosions led to a massive fire that burned for more than 24 hours before being extinguished on November 14. Vice General Manager Zhao Haifeng of the Jilin Petrochemical Company stated that all equipment and channels connecting to the plant were shut down to ensure safety. However, this was little comfort to the thousands of people affected.

Over 10,000 residents, including students from Beihua University and the Jilin Institute of Chemical Technology, were evacuated. Hotels and taxis joined efforts to shelter those displaced by the incident.


Environmental Impact

The disaster’s effects extended beyond the immediate human toll. Over 100 tons of pollutants, including carcinogenic benzene and nitrobenzene, leaked into the Songhua River, sparking fears of long-term environmental and health consequences. Benzene exposure, known to reduce red blood cell count and increase the risk of leukemia, posed a significant threat.

The toxic spill formed an 80-kilometer-long slick that drifted downstream, contaminating the Songhua River and beyond. Efforts to dilute the pollution, such as opening sluices at upstream hydroelectric dams, proved insufficient. The contamination ultimately reached the Amur River and entered Russia’s Far East, threatening marine ecosystems and human health in multiple regions.


Government Response

The Chinese government took swift action, closing water plants and suspending water supplies to prevent further harm. In Harbin, one of China’s largest cities, residents endured a three-day water shutdown, causing widespread panic and rumors of further disasters. Emergency measures, such as drilling 100 new artesian wells, were implemented to provide clean water, but the damage was already done.


Lessons Learned

The Jilin chemical explosion underscored the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations in industries handling hazardous materials. Initial responses by the company were widely criticized, as they initially denied the severity of the pollution. It was only when the benzene slick became undeniable that the truth emerged.
