As a matter of human rights and fundamental equality, it is imperative that the world embrace LGBTQ rights. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities have long been marginalized and discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Denying them basic human rights violates their dignity and leads to economic,
social, political exclusion which harms both individuals and society at large.

Embracing LGBTQ rights means acknowledging their civil liberties such as freedom from discrimination in employment or housing opportunities; the right to marry those they love; access to comprehensive healthcare that includes transgender healthcare needs; legal protections from hate crimes or violence.

By honoring LGBTQ rights we also encourage tolerance, respect for diversity and ultimately provide better outcomes for all people regardless of who they are or whom they love.

However, it is important we acknowledge that the concept of LGBTQ rights and acceptance is a complicated and nuanced issue, as it often intersects with different cultural values and beliefs. While some countries embrace LGBTQ individuals and their basic human rights, others view certain aspects of the community as a direct violation of their cultural norms.

For instance, Uganda’s government banned LGBTQ rights because it defies African values. It is in these instances that discussions surrounding compulsory acceptance become challenging, as forcing societies to adhere to a singular set of values causes backlash. This was evident in the recent 2022 World Cup in Qatar where authorities cautioned football fans against the LGBTQ concept while in the country.

It is necessary for respective institutions to promote dialogue and understanding in order for meaningful progress towards equity and inclusion to occur.
