Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a viral respiratory illness caused by the MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV), which was identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. Since its initial emergence, MERS-CoV has led to significant health problems in the Middle East and worldwide.

Origin and Transmission Routes of MERS-CoV

MERS-CoV is a zoonotic virus that is transmitted from infected camels to humans. However, human-to-human transmission can also occur, especially in close contact and healthcare settings. Although the natural reservoir of the virus is not fully known, bats are also thought to play a role.

Symptoms and Clinical Course

MERS-CoV infection can exhibit a wide range of clinical courses, from mild respiratory symptoms to severe acute respiratory failure. The most common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Some patients may also experience gastrointestinal and renal symptoms such as diarrhea and kidney failure. Individuals with chronic diseases and weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing severe infections.

Diagnosis and Treatment

MERS-CoV diagnosis is made by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment for MERS-CoV. Treatment consists of supportive care, and mechanical ventilation may be required for patients with respiratory failure.

Epidemiology and Global Spread

Although MERS-CoV initially emerged in the Middle East, it has spread to different regions of the world through travel. Outbreaks occurring especially in healthcare settings have played an important role in the spread of the virus.

Ways to Protect Against MERS-CoV

Measures that can be taken to protect against MERS-CoV include:

  • Avoiding close contact with camels and other animals
  • Washing hands frequently with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers
  • Covering the mouth and nose with a tissue or the inside of the elbow when coughing or sneezing
  • Avoiding close contact with sick people
  • Travelers to the Middle East, especially those with chronic diseases, should be careful

MERS-CoV continues to be a significant threat to global health. Early diagnosis, isolation, and infection control measures are of great importance in controlling the spread of the virus.
