A Haven for Biodiversity
The surrounding jungle is home to an array of wildlife, including jaguars, pumas, monkeys, giant anteaters, and iguanas. The region’s flora boasts over 300 plant species, many of which are endemic and found nowhere else on Earth.
The World’s Highest Waterfall
At 979 meters, Angel Falls holds the record for the world’s tallest waterfall. The constant lightning storms in the area leave no tree undamaged at the top of the plateau.
Formation and Tourism
The waterfall is formed by the Churun River, which plunges over the edge of the Auyán-tepui Table Mountain. Opened to tourists in 1990, the area is known for its extreme humidity, with rainfall almost daily, except during the dry season from December to March.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
In 1944, Angel Falls and Canaima National Park were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Discovery and Exploration
American aviator James Angel discovered the waterfall in 1933 while searching for gold and diamond fields. He returned in 1937 with a research expedition, but their landing attempt failed, damaging the aircraft. The plane remained there for 33 years before being restored and is now on display at Ciudad Bolivar’s airport.
Nature’s Spectacle
The waterfall’s 800-meter plunge creates a breathtaking fog that can be seen from kilometers away.
