Plitvice Lakes National Park: A Natural Wonder in Croatia
Plitvice Lakes National Park is nestled in the Mount Mcar area of central Croatia, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Spanning 296.55 square kilometers, the park is famous for its 16 cascading lakes, interconnected by mesmerizing waterfalls. These lakes vary in color from azure to green, gray, and blue, depending on the minerals, organisms, and the angle of sunlight.
Formed by the confluence of small rivers and underground streams, the lakes are separated by natural travertine dams—limestone deposits created by moss, algae, and bacteria. These travertine barriers are fragile and grow at a rate of about 1 centimeter per year, continuously shaping and evolving the park’s landscape.
The Upper and Lower Lakes
The park is divided into two sections: the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes. The Upper Lakes are elevated, with forested, rugged terrain and larger, deeper bodies of water. In contrast, the Lower Lakes have gentler slopes and are more affected by human activity.
The Lower Lakes are home to the park’s most spectacular feature, the Veliki Slap (Big Waterfall), which stands 78 meters (256 feet) high. Here, the water from the final lake flows into the Korana River, creating a breathtaking waterfall.

The park’s interconnected lakes are renowned for their vibrant turquoise and emerald hues, which change due to the mineral content and organisms in the water.
