On September 11, 2024, my wife, Yong En, and I visited the Our Lady of Providence Chapel at Providence University, located in the Shalu District of Taichung City. Though it is a relatively new structure—construction began on November 26, 2016, and was completed on December 6, 2019—it has already gained widespread recognition for its distinctive design.
According to the chapel’s informational leaflet, the church embodies the profound concept of “embracing the world and uniting all as one.” Its exterior design, inspired by bamboo, symbolizes humility, integrity, and openness.
The bamboo motifs also convey the theme of spiritual rebirth. Viewed from above, the structure takes the shape of a fish, evoking the biblical miracle of the “five loaves and two fish.” Additionally, the walkway leading from the university’s entrance to the chapel is called the “Path of Truth,” representing the spiritual journey toward eternal happiness.
The Church of Our Lady of Providence stands out not only for its unique architectural style but also for its deep spiritual symbolism.
As a Christian, my journey in Bible study was greatly shaped by Catholic missionaries who worked tirelessly to spread the gospel throughout Taiwan. I remain deeply grateful for their guidance and dedication.
