The first internet virus, known as the “Creeper” virus, emerged in 1971. Created by Bob Thomas, it was an experimental virus that displayed the message “I’m the creeper, catch me if you can!” as a way to test network security.

In the 1980s, computer viruses began spreading through floppy disks. One of the most notable early viruses was the “Brain” virus, created in 1986 by two Pakistani brothers, Basit and Amjad Farooq Alvi. It infected MS-DOS systems and displayed the brothers’ name and address.

The rise of the internet in the 1990s enabled viruses to spread more quickly. The “I Love You” virus, also known as the “Love Bug,” was a notable example. Released in 2000, it infected millions of computers worldwide, causing widespread damage.

Today, internet viruses continue to evolve, using tactics like phishing and ransomware to compromise systems. Understanding the history of computer viruses helps us appreciate the importance of cybersecurity and staying vigilant online.
